What is your perfect day?
I am waking up in the isolated "Nights in Rodanthe" house around 8am to no alarm but the waves and the birds, the sweet salty air and gauzy white linens blowing through an open balcony door.
I am alone. I am in Italy. I live here.
A morning swim is in order. [Have you seen the movie Blue Crush? Her morning work out- just like that.]
Around 9:30 I get back, making chocolate chip pancakes and hashbrown casserole with my ipod on shuffle.
I sit and eat while reading Harry Potter.
10:30- a bath with windows open all around. It is a hot, bright blue day.
At eleven I put on the perfect sunny dress. My hair is nearly to my waist, with just the right wave from the warmth. Rupert calls. (Grint, duh.)
We meet at noon for a walk through random shore towns. He is here on holiday. We buy odd trinkets and books and spend no thought on money. We are just friends and have been for years but he is also in love with me. We wind up at an outdoor concert beneath huge trees. He plays with my hair while I read him prose, sprawled on the shady grass. We're just friends but maybe I have a secret fondness for him after all.
At two, we have spring rolls and icy cokes -with lime- at a cafe on the pier. We talk about the movie premier this summer, how I'll be there. We talk about relationships. We reminisce.
Three o'clock: we meet Dan and Emma at the beach. We spend the afternoon on Dan's yacht. Whenever he can catch me alone, Dan questions me about Rupert. He knows. He wants to know how Alex feels about it (Mclean, who else?)
I say, Of course he is okay with it. He knows Rupert is my very best friend.
I have a great swimsuit and body to match.
At six I am saying goodbye to Rupert. There is a long hug. A searching and brief pause. A promise of a phone call once he is back in London.
I shower and get ready for night. Alex comes over at seven thirty and we sit a while and catch up- He spent the day recording. I haven't seen him since Thursday, we're so happy together again. He asks about my day, about Rupert and the rest of the cast, we talk about his day too, about the new album.
We stay in for an hour or so, snuggling and whispering. We've been seeing each other for two years now, and we both live in separate yet close beach houses here in Italy. He wants to move in soon, but I am hesitant.
Around nine, we meet up with Jenna and Nick, who just got engaged. (!) We go out to our favorite restaurant and talk and laugh for nearly two hours. We're all very close. Mom calls because the time difference makes it morning there, and I pass the phone around to everyone. All is well at home.
Later we're having a bonfire on the beach with the rest of the boys and other mutual friends. We spend the night laughing and dancing- it is warm and the stars are a million.
Because the next day is Sunday Alex sleeps over. (Maybe in my day -dream that's okay.)
I suppose that for you, this is where I should stop.
