Wednesday Art Inspiration: The Tree Circus
If you know me, you know I love trees.
So imagine the delight that filled my soul when I happened upon the tree circus this morning.
Apparently this guy, Axel Erlandson, perfected the art of shaping trees. He was an arborsculptor who lived from 1884-1964, and he opened a horticultural attraction in 1947 featuring his unique trees. This very attraction was "The Tree Circus."
He would first create designs on paper, and then he would make the tree by planting in specified patterns, and then bending, grafting and pruning it.
When children asked how he got his trees to grow like that, he would reply, "I talk to them."
I found this gem of information at Arborsmith Studios, where Robert Reams has dedicated his life to bringing back the art form arborsculpture. I love his peace trees.
You can read more at his blog, which I will surely be following.
This is probably the best thing I have discovered in quite some time.
