Because we can.
This statement, taken from the Animal Welfare Section of the AVMA [American Veterinary Medical Association]:
California Proposition 2, a ballot initiative that will go before California voters in November 2008, would require that egg-laying hens, veal calves, and pregnant sows have room enough to lie down, stand, turn around, and fully extend their limbs, effective 2015.
For approximately 12 cents more per egg, we can't afford to provide the animals we eat room to lie down, stand, turn around, and fully extend their limbs??
Well, I am grateful for the those that think we not only can, but that we must.
This article from the L.A. Times proves that we can.
This article is a fantastic compilation of sources and articles that are pro animal rights. I love the way she concludes:
"Do you believe the for-profit industries screaming about the sky falling, especially industries which are already pretty highly profitable (think oil industry, think pharma, and, yes, think the egg industry.)
Or do you believe folks who are motivated by something other than their own wallet?"
